ABOUT
Karen Cryer
RYT500, IAYT Yoga Instructor
Karen’s interest in adding yoga & qigong to mindful movement sprang from personally not being able to find a yoga class that she found to be safe and workable for a body that was changing and getting older. That lead Karen to complete a Yoga for Seniors program at Duke University Integrative Medicine with an emphasis on certain medical conditions.
She also completed a certification program in Yoga for Osteoporosis with Dr. Loren Fishman (Manhattan Physical Medicine) and Ellen Saltonstall. These programs offer practices that are beneficial to body, mind, and heart in a way that reduces risk of injury, so common in many vigorous LA yoga classes. Most recently. Karen completed training with Tias Little in SATYA (Somatic Awareness for Yoga Attunement) which she applies to her daily teachings.
Karen is a RYT-500, registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance. She has completed:
-
Sacred Energy Arts teacher training in Hatha yoga
-
Taoist Qigong with Sifu Matthew Cohen
-
Yoga for Seniors with Carol Krucoff and Kimberly Carson
-
Certified in the Dr. Loren Fishman method of Yoga for Osteoporosis
-
Completed 2 years of Yoga Therapy program at Loyola Marymount University
-
Member of IAYT, International Association of Yoga Therapists
-
Certified Prime of Life Yoga teacher
-
Insight LA Meditation Facilitators training certification with Trudy Goodman, Ph.D.
-
Completed SATYA training with Tias Little
-
Various trainings with YogaU, including posture & alignment training
What began as a personal journey developed into teaching the Sacred Movement class at Insight LA, honoring the traditions of her teacher Sifu Matthew Cohen and Sacred Energy Arts. Karen also extends deep appreciation to Trudy Goodman for her teachings and encouragement along this path.

No Mud, No Yoga?
A Deeper Look
My class is unique. I’ve had training & education on so many different levels and disciplines it would be difficult to say what my “style” is. It is my own. It is a hybrid of years of muscle therapy work with deep knowing of anatomy and how the body moves. It is Iyengar & Hatha yoga, it is Taoist qigong, it is yoga for osteoporosis, and sensory awareness work, it is Feldenkrais, and more.
My website - No Mud, No Yoga - is based off the phrase No Mud No Lotus by Thich Nhat Hanh that I love.
It is written in his beautiful calligraphy behind my practice space (pictured).
